Blasphemy on the web

According to news reports this morning, Pakistan is to start monitoring the internet for content which might offend Muslims.

The Pakistani Ministry of Information of Technology has issued instructions that some sites, including Google, Hotmail and You Tube are to be monitored by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.

Earlier this year Facebook was temporarily banned in Pakistan after a competition on the site invited people to submit drawings of Muhammad.

If I am ever offended by anything on the internet, for example sites about barbaric acts committed in the name of Islam, I find the easiest way to deal with it is to shut down the browser.

Perhaps Muslims in Pakistan could consider doing the same?

Offices of the Catholic Church in Belgium raided

Story taken from the BBC News Site. For full story click here.

Belgian authorities have raided the headquarters of the Belgian Catholic Church during an investigation into child sex abuse claims.

A spokesman for the Brussels prosecutors’ office confirmed that the palace of the archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels had been sealed off.

Police also raided the home of retired Archbishop Godfried Danneels.

All I can say is it is about time, hopefully there will be prosecutions, not only of the priests who actually committed sexual offences against children, but charges of aiding and abetting these offences by senior officials within the church.

I also have to say, in agreement with PZ Myers, I’m looking forward to the UN marching into the offices of the Vatican and “a whole line of shame-faced old men in dresses led out to the paddy wagons like a transvestite Mafia mob.”
