Cardinal Just Doesn’t Get It!
His reasoning (such as it is) is that more people responded to the consultation on Marriage Equality than did on Scottish Independence and there is going to be a referendum on that!
But he is comparing apples with oranges here. Scottish Independence is a political issue which affects everyone and has major constitutional, domestic and international implications. Putting this to a public vote in a referendum is a resonable approach regardless of which side of the issue you fall. Marriage Equality is about fundamental human rights which actually should be automatic and not subject to a popular vote. The fact that public opinion, and the opinion of the polititians is very much in favour of this North of the Border and the RC Church’s bigoted homophobia in wanting to deny people these rights is being rejected just goes to show that the poor old cardinal just doesn’t get it!
The Catholic Church IS Liable
The court of appeal has ruled that the Catholic Church is liable for the wrongdoings of its priests.
A case brought by a victim of child rape (now in her forties) has been upheld by the court. Her lawyer stated:
“It is hoped that this ruling will now be accepted, and that victims of abuse by Catholic priests can be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
Of course in the best traditions of UK law this is not necessarily the final word. Leave to appeal has been denied until after a similar case goes to the Supreme Court later this month.

The Church is “Frustrated”…Apparently!
The ABofC has warned that the CofE is “frustrated” over the issue of women Bishops, the BBC reports.
So there are splits over the appointment of women bishops, gay marriage, calls for disestablishment…how much can this edifice take? Hopefully not much more!
