When I first saw that headline I thought it was a recruiting advert from the Irish Times. ! And at first I wondered Why ? This country already has an endless supply of religious child abusers ! The only difference being that, here in N.Ireland they dont need to “Go on the run” as the Catholic church will simply move the perpitraitors to another parish, or in more recent times, just pay off their victims to silence them ! And yet these churches are still supported by their parishioners, more out of fear, than loyalty.Such is the power control this establishment wields. Where do we even begin to tackle this monster,? when they are beyond the reach of the law of the land !
I know what you mean trev, this whole situation can make you despair. However, your neighbours in the RoI have undermined what was a functioning catholic theocracy. It was a long and arduous struggle but the reputation of the church is in tatters as a result of govt financed investigations and very public reports on child abuse by priests in the republic. It is still very poweful there but the respect and the fawning subservience of politicians in the republic, ( following Enda Kenny’s speech which slammed the rcc for covering up child abuse,) seems to have reached a low ebb
In Australia a Royal Commission is going to investigate child abuse in catholic institutions (and secular ones) on a nationwide basis.
In Boston US the catholic church has been financially crippled due to compensation claims and has seen numerous priests jailed.
Also let’s not forget we now know it is happening. As in the past it was well hidden and denied by the church, well they can’t do either of those so easily anymore. That is an achievement in itself.
There is a long way to go but at least things are beginning to move in the right direction.
Thank you for your comments Russell. I think despair and frustration are the key factors in my view of the rcc, and yes we have a long, long, way to go in NI & ROI to inflict any serious damage to these evil institutions, who still maintain immense power, through fear over innumerable people. I agree a bit at a time is a step in the right direction, perhaps I am looking for too much too soon, but your messaage has give me a glimmer of hope for future generations. Thanks again
It is a long way to go but as Russell pointed out, we are making progress. Unfortunately we have hundreds of years of brainwashing and indoctrination to combat. Our only weapon is education, which is not a lot when you consider the barbaric methods used to force christianity. However, we must never stoop to their methods.
The move away from the rcc has begun and I think will only get faster as the years go by. I refuse to believe that everyone who goes to mass is intrinsically evil, they go because of brainwashing, fear or any other force the church can put on them. However, those that are in control of their senses and can think should be considered to have some of the guilt of the church, even if they are not legally complicit.
It is when we can get through to those who can think and have the will to think that real progress can be made. To do that we need people like Enda Kelly who are prepared to challenge the evils of the church and we need to be rid of people like Warsi, who uses government priviledge to act as an apologist for all religions.
