Progress in Sordid Saudi Arabia?
on: January 23, 2018, 21:03

There are signs of less oppression of non-believers if not of less prejudice:
Though it is still anecdotal, there is evidence of growing atheism in this oil country. Not so long ago revealing to anyone you are an atheist was very dangerous. There was the possibility of government arrest. Also one assumed whoever you were talking to was a follower of the faith and would be offended. According to the link both of those inhibitions are much less common today...

This should be seen in the context of social and economic reforms (as well as rivalry with Iran)...
..Casting himself as a champion of the young, Prince Muhammad (known as MBS) understands that his country must reinvent itself to deal with the end of the oil boom, a burgeoning and indolent population, and a puritanical Wahhabi religious ideology that has been a Petri dish for jihadism. He has set out ambitious plans to harness private firms to reform the state and wean the country off oil. He has also eased some social strictures, promising to end the ban on women drivers and restraining the religious police. He speaks of returning to a “moderate Islam open to the world and all religions”...

Cinemas may open in Saudi Arabia soon and women should be free to drive in June this year.
