proselytising by the back door ?
on: July 6, 2012, 21:54

I’ve been following this story for the last couple of days …
Personally I find it somewhat disturbing ,see what you think…

Why is the National Trust pandering to Creationists?
A new exhibit at Giant's Causeway reflects "views outside mainstream science".

The National Trust has today come under fire for its decision to “reflect and respect” the view that science might not be real. At the Giant's Causeway visitors' centre in Northern Ireland, an interactive audio exhibition on the formation of the Causeway includes the creationist view that the earth was made by God a few thousand years ago - not billions of years ago, as geology and physics and biology and astronomy might suggest.

I think this is a very poor move by the NT and could backfire on them. There are a whole heap of creation myths, are they going to have to put up info detailing each and every one at any site like this? If they don't, then they are promoting just one version of a religion which, I think they'll find, is against the Equality act 2010. If someone from another religion with a differing creation myth complains that their mythology isn't being respected by being shown as well, then there could be a case to answer.

This is why bodies like the NT should steer clear of involvement with any religion. It'll only end in tears, as my mother would say.

I've been thinking on this some more (I really must do my thinking before I post in future, -lol-) and the more I ponder this, the more disturbed I become. By pandering to these people the NT is giving a spurious respectability to the idea of creationism and helping to propagate the meme that there is a controversy and thereby a debate to be had. There is NO controversy and NO debate is needed, creationism is bunkum!

Just re-posting the link to the Spectator piece...

http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/culture/2012/07/why-national-trust-pandering-creationists

about 2/3 of the way down it gives a nice breakdown of the tactic employed by the Caleb foundation.
IE discussing the "debate" ...implying that there is an actual debate which also implies that nothing is settled and that there is anything to debate.

was pointed to this on another site ...for any one who wishes to express their disapproval ....

Even so, I have posted this to the front page of the website. Having more than 2000 signatories cannot hurt!

You are all probably already aware the National Trust is to reconsider its position on the Giants Causeway visitor centre displays.

Below are some comments from the statement on their Press Office Blog:

Our intention was not to promote or legitimise any of these opinions or views. Unfortunately, elements from this part of the display appear to have been taken out of context and misinterpreted by some.
A spokesman said: “Having listened to our members’ comments and concerns, we feel that clarity is needed.
“There is clearly no scientific debate about the age of the earth or how the Causeway stones were formed.
“The National Trust does not endorse or promote any other view.
“Our exhibits, literature and audio guides for visits to the Causeway stones and this renowned World Heritage Site all reflect this.
“To ensure that no further misunderstanding or misrepresentation of this exhibit can occur, we have decided to review the interpretive materials in this section.”

The dawn of enlightenment ? Only time will tell.

We await the result of the review..but from the language and the explicit aknowledgement of the fact there is no debate about the age of the earth and how the causeway formed, I'll take this as a win!
