Devadasi; “servants of god”

A couple of interesting articles in today’s Guardian highlight the shocking practice of devadasi which is found mainly in Southern India.

This tradition, which continues despite being outlawed in 1988, sees young, pre-pubescent girls given by their families to the temple where they will be dedicated to a god or goddess. This dedication ensures that the girls can never marry because they are expected to devote their lives to serving ‘their’ god / goddess. Even more disturbing is that many of the girls are forced in to prostitution once they reach puberty, and find that their virginity has been sold to the highest bidder.

The articles in the Guardian contain some shocking stories from some of the young women and also older woman who have now been abandoned by this system because of their age .

There are organisations working to stop this practice and to help the women involved. Details of these are contained in the articles.

Director Beeban Kidron has made a documentary about this practice which will be shown on Monday 24th January at 10pm on BBC4.

Witches to be taxed!

According to a report on the Guardian website, witches in Romania are are to be taxed, in a move to help the Romanian economy and prevent tax evasion.

Witches, along with astrologers and fortune tellers (and presumably all other charlatans) will be expected to pay 16% tax on their earnings.

Predictably the witches are hitting back in the most appropriate way; by casting spells on the country’s politicians.

News updates will be posted here if Romania finds itself being ruled by a toad.
