Why the AGM matters

The Annual General Meeting is where the members of Atheism UK come together to review the year, set the direction for the year ahead, and elect the officers who will do the practical work of running Britain’s dedicated atheist organisation. It is the one meeting each year where every full member has an equal vote on the questions that shape our advocacy, our public campaigns, and our support work for people leaving religion.

Whether you have been a member for a decade or joined last week, this is your meeting. It is also, in the truest sense, an act of the very kind of civic life we advocate for: a group of ordinary people, gathered without ceremony or clergy, making collective decisions on the basis of open discussion and a fair vote.

A fitting venue

Leicester Secular Hall has been the meeting place of the Leicester Secular Society since 1881, making it one of the oldest continuously-operating secular meeting houses anywhere in the world. Its red-brick Victorian frontage on Humberstone Gate is decorated with medallions of the great free-thinkers whose ideas shaped modern secularism — among them Socrates, Voltaire, Paine, Owen, and Rousseau.

We think it is exactly the right place for the AGM of Britain’s atheist advocacy organisation. Every member who walks through the doors is walking through a physical reminder that we are part of a long, patient, and profoundly civic tradition.

On the agenda

The full agenda will be circulated to members ahead of the meeting. It will follow the customary shape:

  • Chair’s welcome and apologies for absence
  • Minutes of the previous AGM
  • President’s report on the year’s work and public activity
  • Treasurer’s report and the accounts
  • Election of officers and committee members
  • Motions from the membership
  • Any other business

Members who wish to propose a motion, stand for election, or raise a question under “any other business” are warmly invited to do so — please contact us in advance so we can circulate the necessary papers.

Joining us on the day

You can attend the AGM either in person at Leicester Secular Hall or online via a livestream we will host on StreamYard. Voting is open to full members whichever way you attend. In-person attendees will have the chance to meet fellow members before and after the meeting.

If you plan to travel to Leicester, the hall is a short walk from Leicester railway station, and there is on-street and multi-storey car parking within a few minutes’ walk. The building is on street level and the main meeting room is accessible.
